Drivers assess risk after Newman crash

LAS VEGAS (AP) NASCAR rolled west this week, shifting from the Daytona 500 to Las Vegas Motor Speedway without Ryan Newman.

Newman’s streak of 649 consecutive races dating to 2002 will end Sunday when he misses the second race of the 2020 season as he recovers from a spectacular last-lap crash at Daytona. Kyle Busch wins 7th straight Trucks race

LAS VEGAS (AP) Kyle Busch raced to his seventh straight NASCAR Truck Series victory to push his record total to 57, leading 108 of 134 laps Friday night at hometown Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion swept both stages and finished 5.958 seconds ahead of Johnny Sauter. Busch started the streak in 2018 at Pocono and won all five races he entered last season. Read More...

Johnson fails to finish in final Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) Jimmie Johnson tugged at his baseball cap, walked to a golf cart and sat backward on the dash for a ride out of the Daytona garage. After a Speedweeks where Johnson was hailed by many of his peers as the greatest NASCAR driver of all time, Johnson's expected final Daytona 500 ended with the seven-time champion looking at a scoring pylon that ticked off laps without him.

Johnson was collected in a late-race wreck at the Daytona 500, and his (hash)OneFinalTime kickoff in the final full season of his NASCAR career ended with a 35th-place finish. Read More...

Trump takes warm-up lap in limousine

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) President Donald Trump gave an election-year embrace to NASCAR and its fans Sunday when he became the second president ever to attend the Daytona 500. The presidential motorcade took to the track to join in a warm-up lap after he had told the crowd that the racers and their teams were competing “for pure American glory.”

Following a recitation of the opening command, “Gentleman, start your engines," Trump got into his black limousine for a ceremonial spin around Daytona International Speedway. He had joked moments earlier in a Fox interview that while as president, he was not allowed to drive his own car, " I’m going to hop into one of these cars and I'm going to get into this race if possible. Gragson, Team Earnhardt win at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) Noah Gragson won his first career Xfinity Series race when Saturday's opener was stopped on the final lap by a crash well behind the winning JR Motorsports Chevrolet.

It was the third consecutive win at Daytona for a car fielded by Dale Earnhardt Jr., his sister and Rick Hendrick in what they consider a family business. Read More...

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) NASCAR opened the Truck Series season with one fiery crash, a truck stuck on its roof and Grrant Enfinger in victory lane following overtime and a door-to-door race to the finish line.
